Il Était Une Forêt… has a nice calm intro before getting into the heavy stuff, punctuated by a fairly frightening scream. Usually not a fan of straight screams like this, but it works well here. It’s a pretty neat song overall, the type of black metal that I really enjoy zoning out to. It’s calm in its roughness and I enjoy it. Le Gala Des Gens Heureux has a bit more symphonic elements going on, though for a good chunk of the time that just means backing synths. Again though, I love getting lost in the song.

Cicatrices is mostly in the same vein. It’s still enjoyable, and has one neat section where a lot of music kind of stops and it just sounds like the vocalist is crying. Veux-Tu Danser? is a slower, more contemplative track. The buildup is pretty good in it as well. Profonde Misanthropie is sort of more of the same, but I still like it. La Dryade is entirely instrumental, and contains almost no black metal elements. It’s pretty much purely a symphonic track, and works to close out the album. Judging by the change in mood in this track and the English track titles, there does seem to be some kind of overall theme to the record but I can’t really say what it is. As I said, this is a good album to sort of relax to, if you’re into black metal, but the darker atmosphere does make it kind of a dense album to get into.

Final Rating: 8/10
